Along the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam, three monumental public housing complexes are designed by famous architect Michel de Klerk. The most expressionistic block is nicknamed The Ship and belongs to the top of the Amsterdam School architectural movement of the early twentieth century. The unconventional building exudes an air of festivity and is a true scultpure of bright orange bricks. The Ship is still inhabited and the museum is located in different parts of the building.
Het Schip also contains a meeting space for residents, a school and a post office.
The museum has a variety of interesting permanent displays about the Amsterdam School movement, including its background and sociological contributions to the city. You can also see a restored working-class flat and a collection of “street furniture” done in Amsterdam School style, including lamps, benches, trash bins and more.
Museum Het Schip regularly organizes guided walking tours past the most prominent buildings done in the Amsterdam School style, as well as tours of the interior of the Scheepvaarthuis.
Every hour a guided tour (often in Dutch) leads around the building, At 3 PM we guarentee an English guided tour. Groups above 10 persons can always make a reservation for an exta guided tour. During the day we do the Dutch tour also bi-langual if possible.
