For Camille Walala’s first foray into hotel design, the London-based French artist teamed up with Mauritian architect Jean-François Adam to transform a riad-like building at the edge of Mauritius’ Palmar Beach into eye-popping Instagram bait. The 59-room boutique inn, is done up with graphic Memphis Group-like geometry; black-and-white stripes à la French conceptual artist Daniel Buren; and punchy islander paints and fabrics in bold coral, pineapple and cerulean hues.
The hip SALT of Palmar, set on a white sand beach on the east coast, is the first eco-hotel on Mauritius. Its vibrant interiors by French artist Camille Walala, locally sourced organic food, a salt therapy room, cool rooftop bar, staff-led local excursions and interesting skills swap experiences - are what sets this accommodation apart from its peers.
Next to the stunning design, two things really stand out: The Salt Equilibrium spa contains the island's first salt therapy room, and a choice of simple massages and scrubs, all featuring salt. And the way it promotes exploring the island, with 'This is Mauritius', a guidebook written by locals.
SALT of Palmar is made to give both you and the local islanders inspiring experiences. The boutique hotel was styled by Camille Walala - her bold style was mixed with Mauritius’ soulful style and that Mauritian influence comes through loud and clear. It makes this boutique hotel completely unique. It’s inspiring. And it’s a very happy place to be.
And since day one SALT has embraced a Zero Single-Use Plastic policy. Since, they haven't stopped thinking of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Or even better, upcycle.
