Brooklyn Grange is a 2.5-acre organic urban rooftop farm in New York City, growing high quality vegetables and honey for local restaurants, markets, and community-supported agriculture. The farms span across two rooftops, one on a 43,000 sq. ft. building straddling Astoria and Long Island City, and the other atop the Brooklyn Navy Yard – the world’s largest rooftop soil farm.
Together, they produce over 40,000 lbs. of organically-grown vegetables each year. The Grange also operates New York City’s largest apiary, with over thirty naturally-managed honey beehives, which yields approximately 1,500 pounds of honey annually.
Brooklyn Grange farms rooftops, builds green spaces, and promotes sustainable living and local ecology through food, education, and events. We believe that social enterprise is a powerful driver of positive change, and that businesses should be a nourishing part of their community.
Brooklyn Grange also specializes in green roof, rooftop farm and urban green space design and construction. We consult on projects internationally, and we build and maintain gardens, green roofs, green walls, tree pits and yards throughout New York City and the surrounding area.
City land is scarce and is sold only for top dollar, so it makes sense looking up toward under-utilised space found on roofs. At the Brooklyn Grange they use 2.5 acres of it and create profit for their business, community and the environment.
