Since 1997 the museum is housed in this striking building designed by Renzo Piano. Piano has created a theatrical counter-form and where the traffic enters the tunnel he made an ascending roof, which functions as an urban square with a view over the city and the IJ.
Notable buildings of this Italian architect include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (with Richard Rogers, 1977), The Shard in London (2012), and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City (2015).
The museum contains five floors of hands-on science exhibitions and is the largest science center in the Netherlands. It attracts annually over 500,000 visitors, which makes it the fifth most visited museum in the Netherlands.
The Italian born architect was named one of Time magazine’s top 100 most influential people in 2008. Piano who is an Italian Pritzker Prize-winning architect has been instrumental in shaping modern architecture that stands on its own in recognition. In his younger years, he worked with the world-renowned architect Louis Kahn and soon become known for his unique applications of materials and details.
For the Nemo Science Center Piano has created a theatrical counter-form and where the traffic enters the tunnel he made an ascending roof, which functions as an urban square with a view over the city and the IJ. In the interior, too, there is an ascending line. Open, wide interconnecting stairs lead visitors from floor to floor to the highest point in the building.
